Common Fund for Commodities
The Common Fund for Commodities is an inter-governmental financial institution established within the framework
of the United Nations. The Fund’s specific mandate is to support developing countries that are commodity dependent
to improve and diversify commodities production and trade. The Fund supports, inter alia, projects which promote
productivity and diversification of production and commodity exports, create new end uses and/or commercial outlets
for new products, improve marketing channels and the processing of commodities. It will continue to play its role
in these areas, giving special attention to the Least Developed Countries.

International Fund for Agricultural Development
Grant Program:
IFAD's main aim is rural poverty alleviation through agricultural and rural development supported by loans and
grants. The site also includes links to websites that provide funding and financing for development projects
worldwide, including East Africa.
African Women's Development Fund
The newly established African Women's Development Fund (AWDF) is a fundraising and grant-making fund which aims to
support the work of the African women's movement. The beneficiaries of the fund will be local, national and regional
African women's organisations. The AWDF will raise money and make grants for the support of non-profit African
women's organisations working for social justice, equity and peace.
Comic Relief
Grant Program:
Comic Relief is committed to helping end poverty and social injustice in the poorest countries in the world.
Through its Africa grants program, Comic Relief funds projects focused on: people affected by conflict; women and
girls; urban poverty; disabled people; pastoralists and hunter-gatherers; people affected by HIV and AIDS. Please
note that, at present, Southern NGOs can only access funds through partnerships with Northern NGOs. Application forms
and guidelines can be downloaded from the website.
The Core Initiative
Grant Program:
The CORE Initiative Small Grants Programme aims to provide resources, alongside organisational and technical capacity
building, to organisations in southern, central and East Africa responding to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
East African Youth Alliance
Grant Program:
This is a grassroots, regional network of youth organizations and groups all over East Africa . The website promotes
networking and resource utilization and also provides information on funding opportunities in their grants program.
Volunteers for Africa
Grant Program:
Volunteers for Africa offer a service to NGOs in East and Central Africa , connecting them with volunteers and funders,
as well as providing assistance and advice on how to write funding proposals.
The McKnight Foundation
Grant Program:
The goal of McKnight's Africa Grants Program is to foster women's social and economic empowerment in Tanzania, Uganda,
and Zimbabwe. It seeks to increase women's access to skills and economic opportunities that will help them gain
greater control over their lives. In addition, the program tries to help women participate more fully in their
households and communities as equal decision-makers. Each year, the Africa program awards about US $750,000 to
projects that support this goal.
Rainbo: Research, Action and Information Network for the Bodily Integrity of Women
Grant Program:
Rainbo's small grants programme provides modest funds and technical assistance to African NGOs that might not otherwise
have access to mainstream sources of funding. The main objectives of the project are to support effective and
innovative projects that combat FC/FGM; to strengthen the institutional capacity of African NGOs working on the
issue FC/FGM as part of advancing the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and girls; and to expand
collaborative relationships among NGOs, activists, academics and researchers in Africa.
